After assessment with Chloe McHugh, the client will be appointed to the therapist deemed to be best matched to them as individuals, and in relation to their presenting issue e.g .a client who presents with panic attacks will be referred to a counsellor who uses Cognitive Behaviour Therapy techniques. Attending group can help clients speed their progress, and offers them the opportunity to meet other individuals experiencing the same difficulties as themselves. This is often very reassuring to those who have felt quiet alone and isolated in their distress, and helps them to realise that many people experience emotional difficulty at times. Being able to talk openly and honestly about how they are thinking and feeling is a new reassuring experience for most. As stress and anxiety are so physical, as well as mental in nature, this course has two aspects to it. The first aspect is on a physical level, through the practice of deep breathing and muscle relaxation exercises, combined with an exercise programme designed by our personal Trainer Simon Heffernan. The second aspect is on an emotional and cognitive level, where a focus on changing unhelpful thinking patterns that are the source of strong emotion and anxiety perpetuating behaviours is stressed and practiced. It is therefore based on the principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy where the link between thinking, feeling and behaving is examined and understood.
